Action Man 'Sportsman' Go Kart Description:
The Action Man Go Kart was one of Bob Brechin's (Chef Palitoy Designer of 'gripping hands' fame) first major designs, and one he can be justifiably proud of. He mentions that an original prototype was made first in brass by a man called Lewin, local to Coalville. It was self-assembly and came with in-depth instructions. Included was an outfit for Action Man to race in, with a unique helmet with tinted visor strip. The Action Man Go Kart came with a battery operated remote control hand set which connected to the Go Kart by wire to drive forwards/backwards and provide 'finger-tip' steering of the front wheels by clever linkages. It's production ran for the same years as the Action Man Grand Prix Racing Car of 1970-72
Notes:
The Action Man Grand Go Kart is another sought after piece. The images that was included in the Equipment Manuals of the time were misleading to say the least and didn't resemble the finished product. The scarf (or neckerchief) , and race helmet being unique, are both rare. The Grand Prix Racing Car driver has a red version of the scarf. The bit that is most commonly lost is the number '6' badge - it simply slots into the race frame but shakes free. The wrist straps (designed for hard hands that didn't grip remember) on the steering bars are also hard to find. Few Action Man Go Kart sets remain in complete form.
