Talking Commander Description:

The basic Action Man Action Soldier figure from 1966, was joined by a talking version - the (talking) Commander in 1968. The first of the 'talkers', he spoke 8 phrases by pulling out a cord attached to his dog tag from his chest to coloured markers on cord. Upon letting the cord go it would speak one phrase whilst returning automatically. The talking Commander adopted flock hair in 1970 but retained the same outfit. In 1973 - for one year only - his name became "Talking Commander" - with 'Gripping Hands' a new jersey, peaked cap and muffler. he was replaced in 1974 by the non-talking Field Commander with his separate 'talking' Field Radio. In 1978 he came back - he gained the Eagle Eye head, new voice box with 5 phrases, had the all-new dynamic physique body (note sticker on box announcing such) and sported green trousers, becoming camouflage by 1981.

Action Man Talking Commander five phrases (from 1978) were (in random order):

"Enemy tanks approaching"
"Give me some cover"
"Send out the patrol"
"What’s the password"
"Advance in single file"

Notes:

The dynamic physique Action Man Eagle Eyes Talking Commander actually re-joined the ranks in 1978 first in green trousers as per the standard Soldier, eventually donning camo trousers by the 1981 'Sharpshooter' variation. His new dynamic body contained a new voice mechanism. He speaks five phrases listed above, as the mechanism is different from the earlier type and allowed for less recording room. The box type at launch was in a style of the preceeding original body style with overstickers stating that it was 'Now with a new dymanic physique'. This sticker is typically to one face only, and the box when viewed from a diffent aspect has caused collectors to ponder whether there was a 'hyrid' old body / new Eagle Eyes talking commander, and the consensus is that it has never existed. Boxes have turned up with sticker to front and rear, which, if Palitoy had been consistant, would have stopped any confusion. The subsequent red box left no confusion. In 1981 a 'Sharpshooter neck pip was added to the torso to allow the head to be clipped looking upward by a few more degrees, with appropriately modified box. By 1983 It is thought the red leg tie was leaving the factory tied to the pistol loop at least in some cases - it makes sense and an Official Dossier book also has an image of this. Collectors report otherwise too, so it seems both instances have some volition. In 1983 the Commander's cap badge changed to that of the SAS. The cap and badge was the same as for all the proceeding officers in 1978 - with the Lancers badge. His pull out tag is a dark green (the Talking Space Ranger Commander's tag was black). The jumper, muffler, boots, trousers and belt are typically the same as for the Action Man Soldier of the same year.
