In 1971 Action Man gained the 'The Royal Marines [No.3 Dress Uniform]. It was perhaps incorrectly described by Palitoy as a No.3 uniform in the 1972 Equipment Manual. It is more appropriately described as the No.1 Dress uniform - the No.3 being a tropical dress. It is a simple but smart uniform with the minutest of detailing. The shoulder badges include the letters 'RM", the buckle carries the Royal Marines emblem. The cloth can be a heavy weave navy blue or bushed cotton with brass coloured buttons and detailing. It ran for a year and is one of the rarer of the Action Man 'Famous British Regiments [and uniforms]' colloquially know as 'The Ceremonial Range' which included the Argyll & Sutherland Highlander, Grenadier Guard, Life Guard and Royal Horse Guard (The Blues).
THE ROYAL MARINES [CEREMONIAL DRESS]: Tunic, trousers, boots, belt, bayonet, scabbard, frog, SLR rifle, Cap, information leaflet. Equipment Manual.
The Royal Marine's shoulder badges include the letters 'RM", the buckle the Marines emblem. The trousers appear similar to the Grenadier Guard, however they have a broader red stripe. The bayonet frog is unique to this uniform, the bayonet and scabbard can be found in other sets such as the Grenadier Guard / Parachute Regiment. The SLR rifle of 1970/71 had a straight barrel shaft right up to the stock, and should be the same as in the photo below. (Later SLR rifles had a slight conical shape widening to stop the barrel from breaking off so easily. The bayonet hanger is tiny and is missing from the majority of vintage battle-scarred rifles. The strap should be white elastic (with adjustment buckle) as with the earlier Grenadier Guard. Some tunics carried medals ribbons - possibly those on separate cards. The boots are the lace up type first seen on the British Infantryman - earlier examples have a narrower fit, later broader. Also pictured is an earlier Action Man with 'painted hair' dating from 1966 for display purposes. The 'current' Action Man in 1971 had flock hair (introduced in 1970).
