Parachute Regiment

Period: All Periods

Dates: 1970 - c.83

Description:

The Parachute Regiment set was originally part of the 'Famous British Uniforms' range with its distinctive Union Jack packaging but ran in various guises until the end of production. It was launched in 1970 and featured the SLR rifle for the first time with an elastic adjustable strap, puttees, and a muffler (scarf). Notes:

The Parachute Regiment basically speaking had three main phases. The following descriptions are general only - there was much cross pollination in the Palitoy production line: The first issue (34301) had cloth beret with badge. His jacket was zippered and he had tan coloured puttees. The muffler had a linear weave and frayed easily. His SLR would have had the straight barrel without the widened neck, and adjustable elastic strap. The beret metal badge changed to a printed version. A green version of the beret is part of the Tom Stone figure. Again, being general, the second main type (34124) gained a plastic beret at some point, a peach coloured muffler, a plastic strap to his SLR rifle, and 'ginger' coloured puttees. These ginger coloured puttees are first shown in the 1973 Equipment Manual suggesting that they were introduced in late 1972 or at the beginning of 1973. The plastic beret is first shown in the 1976 Equipment Manual, suggesting that it was introduced in late 1975 or at the beginning of 1976. The last version (34416) dropped the pistol and puttees, but gained plastic webbing, water bottle and grenades. His jacket has the zip replaced by poppers. Puttees are fiddly to put on but for best results: Place the wide end on the ankle and wind round tightly until the thin end comes to an end. Use a pair of tweezers to push the end behind the already tightly wound narrow puttee end. A separate accessory card was the 1971 'Parachute Equipment', (Cat No 34131) containing a crash (shock) helmet, black rimmed green goggles, parachure pack and harness, working parachute and leaflet - a particularly rare set.
